Vehicle fires can lead to catastrophic injury and death. The flammable liquids in a vehicle do not end with the fuel onboard. There is brake fluid, power steering fluid and even anti-freeze. On some large diesel trucks you even have ether, which is used to help start the engine in cold weather. All of these and more provide ample fuel for the complete destruction of both the vehicle, most of the evidence and sadly, the occupants. We have always believed that the fuel system should survive an accident at least as well as the occupants. If the occupants do not receive catastrophic or fatal injuries from the accident, they should not be severely or fatally burned.
